Our 9-month old dachshund Molly, had been suffering from separation anxiety for a couple months. When my husband and I would leave every morning to take our 3 kids to school, that’s when we first noticed the signs of Molly’s separation anxiety. She would start whimpering and whining as soon as we all got up from the breakfast table to head out the door. Molly would do the same thing on Sundays right before we left for church or Wednesday night Bible study and sports practices throughout the week.
We thought Molly’s behavior was nothing too out of the ordinary. That is until one day when we all came home after picking up the kids, and to our shock, half the living room couch had been ripped to shreds. So we reluctantly put Molly in a cage but that didn’t stop her from doing her business all over herself and the newspaper.
“Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth..”
Genesis 1:26 teaches us that God granted us dominion over all living things. But Molly is like family. Correction: Molly is family. We don’t want her being confined like she’s living in a pigsty. But we were desperate for a solution. We didn’t know what to do. The couple weeks of daily separation anxiety felt like an eternity. And it’s not like my husband and I could quit our jobs to stay home with Molly; we have a mortgage to pay.
Thankfully, at a fundraiser for our church, I overheard another congregant talk about something called Peaceful Pup.
Calming Oils From The Bible Work on Man’s Best Friend, Too
I feel ashamed to admit that I thought about putting Molly on anti-anxiety medication. It’s ironic that I’ve been reading the Bible since, well, basically I knew how to read. And in the decades I’ve been reading it, I never thought once to find a Christian solution to Molly’s separation anxiety. It turns out the answers have been in the Bible all along.
You see, there are 188 references to plant oils in the Bible. Perhaps the most legendary of all the stories is in Matthew (2:1–12), when the Magi visits Bethlehem, whereupon seeing the baby Jesus and his mother Mary, the magi kneel down and worship him and offer their three famous gifts—gold, frankincense and myrrh, the latter of the two being precious oils for spiritual anointing and healing the sick.
Today, these precious oils are known as essential oils. And by the grace of God, 6 of these oils were the answers to my prayer to heal Molly.
Peaceful Pup: 100% Pure Therapeutic Grade Anxiety Relief Formula
When I overheard the person that goes to my church talk about Peaceful Pup, excuse the pun, but I was all ears. She told me that Peaceful Pup is a unique blend of 6 plant essential oils. All 6 of these oils date back to the Bible and are still prized for their ability to calm the nervous system.
Lavender was known in ancient times as Spikenard. In addition to being used when Jesus was at Bethany visiting Simon the Leper as told in Mark 14:3, this precious ointment was used by Mary to anoint the feet of Jesus (John 12:3). One of the 11 herbs used in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, modern research shows lavender has natural sedative properties and can, promote deep peace and tranquility.
Chamomile has been used for centuries to help people sleep. Many Bible scholars believe that the passage in Psalm 103 referring to the flowers of the fields specifically describes chamomile. Now when we’re all gone for the day, Waffles stays nice and relaxed (until we get home and she excitedly wags her tail and jumps on us).
Frankincense was used in holy anointing oil since Biblical times. Why is this holy oil in Peaceful Pup? Modern research shows that frankincense is a powerful healing herb, with an amazing ability to reduce anxiety and reduce stress.
Geranium acts as a natural antidepressant and sedative. It even has natural muscle-relaxing properties and helps ease breathing. Furthermore, the active ingredients of the oil balances stress and anxiety-causing hormones.
Lemon was praised in the Holy Land in ancient times, and praised as a “goodly fruit” in Leviticus. The first fruits of this tree were offered in thanksgiving to God. In more recent times, researchers at the Center for Autoimmune Diseases at Tel Aviv University recently discovered that the aroma of lemon oil boosts levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin, and reduces levels of norepinephrine, a stress hormone.
Cypress is mentioned 13 times in the Bible. Its oil has been found in preliminary studies in animals to have sedative and anxiety-reducing properties.
Finally, almond oil is a carrier oil that makes it possible to blend this one of a kind calming remedy safely for all dogs.
I only wish that I reflected on James 1:17 earlier: “Every good gift comes from Him.” Maybe then I would have thought of using essential oils for Molly sooner and spared her (and us) the several days of anguish.
