Essential Oils For Natural Hair Care

Care for your hair—without chemicals. All-natural essential oils are just as effective in adding thickness and beauty to your hair. Whether you’re losing hair, have bald spots, or a receding hair line, try one of the top essential oils for hair growth: Rosemary, Ylang Ylang, and Frankincense.

In addition, all three of these essential oils offer many other benefits when you use them. Powerful and fresh, Rosemary nourishes your scalp, promoting hair growth and thicker hair. It’s loaded with antioxidants that can help keep your hair from thinning.

Rosemary helps with blood circulation and increases cellular metabolism, so it’s wonderful for stimulating hair follicles, resulting in longer and stronger hair growth. It’s also thought to slow down hair loss and graying. In addition to an increase in hair, rosemary aids in eliminating dandruff and dry, itchy scalps.

Like Rosemary, Ylang Ylang works as a hair conditioner, stimulating hair follicles and promoting hair growth. It’s a natural conditioning agent that also helps repair dry, damaged hair. Ylang Ylang stimulates the sebaceous glands, which secrete a lubricating oil matter called sebum into the hair follicles.

This lubricates skin and hair, giving another benefit to your locks: prevention of split ends and damage. On a side note, mixing Ylang Ylang with coconut oil and apple cider vinegar can aid in getting rid of head lice.

Frankincense is another great essential oil that promotes a healthy scalp. It moisturizes existing hair follicles, which helps prevent and treat hair loss. Frankincense cleanses the scalp and like Rosemary, increases blood circulation to the scalp. This strengthens hair follicles and stimulates hair growth.

Frankincense has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that help get rid of scalp infections, along with other skin conditions.

Stacey E. is a fan of Frankincense: “I first got this for my hair. I was using different products and nothing ever worked or made my hair really stiff. It’s amazing. I mix 2 drops with my base and my conditioner and spritz after I towel dry my hair…when I wake up my curls are just soft and pretty instead of hard and unruly. I have compliments on my hair now instead of criticism.”

How To Use:

•  Take three to five drops of essential oil and mix it with several drops of carrier oil such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil. Massage into the scalp and leave it for a few hours before washing your hair. Or massage the mixture into your scalp at bedtime and rinse in the morning. Read more here on how to properly dilute your oils.

•  Mix essential oils in your shampoo or conditioner. Ages 6 and above: For every 10 ml of shampoo, add 10 drops of oil (or five drops if you have sensitive skin). Do a small patch area first to test to make sure you don’t have any allergic reaction to the oil.

•  Mix five drops of essential oil with three tablespoons of heated olive oil. Massage it into your scalp and hair. Wrap a towel around your head for a half hour. This helps the oil really penetrate the hair follicles. Try this on a weekly basis.

Regular use of Rosemary, Ylang Ylang, and Frankincense (or a combination of all three!) supports a healthier scalp and head of hair. Expect other benefits when you use these essential oils, as each has an abundance of other properties that will add to your well-being. Use a combination of these oils as a natural way to improve your skin along with a healthier, fuller and shiny head of hair.
