How To Keep Your Dog Safe & Calm During Thunderstorms

In Florida, more dogs run away during thunderstorms than at any other time. Thats not surprising given that most of us endure over 100 thunderstorms per year. Thats 1 out of 4 days of living hell for our canine friends and thousands of dogs reported lost with each major storm system.

While it may seem like no big deal for us, thunderstorms are a major cause of stress and fear for dogs.

Dogs experience frightening anxiety when hearing loud noises. Thunderstorms instantly put dogs into fight or flight mode. While your dog may be used to hearing the garbage truck or an occasional siren, they don’t get accustomed to thunderstorms and fireworks.

Put yourself in your dog’s shoes (paws). To a dog, the violent sounds of thunderstorms must seem like armageddon!

Dogs in fear experience instinctive flight responses that sends them looking for a haven. They have been reported to jump over fences, crash through windows and gnaw through doors. Thats how many end up on our roadways dodging traffic.

In a nervous state of panic and distress, dogs can loose their sense of direction and many end up lost.

Animal shelter cases spike over 500% during thunderstorms. But many of our shelters just aren’t designed, equipped or staffed to handle so many stressed runaways all at once. Often things only get worse for some.

Sadly, less than 15% of lost pets are returned to their owners. What’s worse is that up to 60% of lost pets have to be euthanized.

Some people try to protect their dog from the shock of thunderstorms by locking their dog in a room with the TV or stereo playing at a loud volume. But again, step in your dog’s paws. Does this seem humane? Dogs have exceptional hearing. They still hear the booming of the thunder over the noise of the TV.

Dogs can sense changes in the atmosphere’s pressure, and it drops ahead of a thunderstorm. You may notice your dog geting nervous ahead of a storm. Signs that your dog may be nervous about a pending storm may include; ears back, tails down, eyes wide, panting, lip-licking and yawning according to the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine.

This is when you want to start comforting and calming your dog, humanely.

There is an easy way to keep your dog safe and calm during thunderstorms (or fireworks if you live near any of our amusement parks). And the best part is you don’t have to lock your dog all alone in a dark room.

This solution doesn’t cause any negative side effects and requires no prescription. Though it’s approved by veterinarians, this low-cost and easy solution doesn’t involve making an appointment with your vet and waiting in line to see one.

The solution is Peaceful Pup

7 Plant Oils That Keeps Dogs Relaxed During Thunderstorms

Peaceful Pup is a blend of 7 safe and soothing essential oils. On their own, all of these essential oils have been studied for their calming effects. When they are blended, the relaxing properties of each of the following oils on the central nervous system become amplified:

  • When exposed to Lavender oil, dogs spend significantly more time resting and sitting and less time moving and barking, says a study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
  • Chamomile oil acts as a muscle relaxer and provides relief from a variety of stressful situations and animal disorders, says VCA Animal Hospitals, which operates more than 750 animal hospitals in North America.
  • Geranium oil has shown significant anti-anxiety and antidepressant activity in several animal studies.
  • Frankincense oil is high in a-pinene, limonene, a-thujene, compounds which have shown to have a tranquilizing effect.
  • Cypress and lemon oil both have sedative effects; they induces a sense of calmness and relaxation when used aromatically or topically. They are particularly useful for fireworks and thunderstorms and other loud noises. Both of these oils also stimulate feelings of happiness and ease.
  • Sweet almond oil acts as an antidepressant on animals, suggests a study in Biomedical Research.

We live in Coral Springs and have a Maltese named Sadie that just loves Peaceful Pup. We use it to help her separation anxiety, as well as during thunderstorms and the 4th of July. Another great quality product from Vitality and I love the scent!
